'Be prepared' rural insurer warns as storms are set to hit Scotland

NFU Mutual is advising homeowners and businesses to ensure they are ready for storms forecast today as the tail of Hurricane Ophelia heads for Scotland.
"Checking properties for things like loose roof tiles and gutters can prevent storms causing damage to homes and farm buildings. Inside it's well worth having torches and emergency supplies on hand in case power goes off," said Martin Malone, NFU Mutual Regional Manager for Scotland.

To maintain close contact with its customers, NFU Mutual's network of 27 local branches across Scotland and its regional office in Glasgow are on standby to help customers when required.

This means that when gales and floods strike the insurer is able to get to affected customers quickly, making emergency payments, arranging alternative accommodation and getting drying-out and roof repairs underway.

Despite widespread flooding and power cuts in Scotland during Storm Frank in 2015, NFU Mutual's local agents were able to get through to affected policyholders to get emergency repairs started.

This strategy has meant NFU Mutual customers have received help very quickly when events strike.

"We're a mutual insurer whose first priority is to help customers when they need us most," said Martin.

"Our network of local offices means we know our customers and are able to come to their assistance very quickly when they are in trouble after weather events like storms and floods. When extreme weather strikes, we quickly make contact with all seriously-affected homeowners and businesses. We make immediate payments of £500 - or more if necessary - and can arrange emergency accommodation for people who are unable to stay in their homes."

NEW IBERS RESEARCH TO BOOST GRASSLAND EFFICIENCY AND IMPROVE PROSPECTS FOR LIVESTOCK FARMERS

Monday 16th May 2016

Greater profitability and reduced environmental impact from livestock farming are key objectives for a new three year forage breeding research project that started in February 2016 at IBERS Aberystwyth University. Funded by Innovate UK and sponsored by Germinal, the project will lead to the development of new varieties of perennial ryegrass and white clover that combine the best in yield and quality attributes with enhanced nitrogen and phosphorus utilisation. Ultimately, this research will give livestock farmers the opportunity to produce quality forage with lower nitrogen and phosphate fertiliser inputs, thereby saving costs whilst reducing any negative environmental impact caused by nutrient leaching, run-off and potential greenhouse gas emissions. "IBERS has led the way in developing and applying innovative plant…
